NStrim 1.8.3: Real-Time Communication, Enhanced Documentation, and a More Polished Experience

The best feedback comes from the front lines—from educators managing 50 students, competition organizers running high-stakes events, and judges evaluating code under time pressure. NStrim 1.8.3 is built on that feedback.

This release introduces a two-way communication system between students and teachers, comprehensive deployment guides for every supported framework, and dozens of quality-of-life improvements that make Mission Control faster, clearer, and more intuitive than ever.

Here's what's new.

Introducing the Chat System (Public Beta)

Communication during coding sessions just changed forever.

Until now, students who hit a roadblock had limited options: raise their hand, wait for the teacher to walk by, or struggle in silence. In competitions, this meant lost time. In classrooms, it meant frustrated learners.

The new Chat system connects students directly to teachers—without leaving their dashboard.

Students can send questions from the same interface where they view tasks, access Git credentials, and check their deployment status. Teachers receive messages in real-time, with browser notifications ensuring nothing gets missed.

But here's the feature that competition organizers will love: Urgent Reports.

When a student encounters a critical issue—a broken environment, a deployment failure, a genuine emergency—they can flag it as urgent. These messages appear with a red indicator in the teacher's chat panel, cutting through the noise and ensuring immediate attention.

For Skills Finland, EuroSkills, and every organization running time-sensitive events: this is the communication layer you've been asking for.

Framework Documentation: 9 Frameworks, 5 Languages, Zero Guesswork

Every framework now has its own comprehensive deployment guide.

Whether your students are building with Laravel, React, Vue.js, Angular, Next.js, Express.js, Svelte, React Vite, or Vanilla PHP, they now have step-by-step instructions for:

  • Initial project setup
  • Environment configuration
  • Database connections
  • Deployment workflows
  • Docker development tips
  • Framework-specific troubleshooting

And because NStrim serves educators across Europe, these guides are available in English, Latvian, German, Finnish, and Hungarian.

No more linking to external tutorials. No more "google how to deploy Laravel." The documentation lives where your students work—inside Mission Control.

Teacher Marking: Faster Access to Everything

Grading is faster when every tool is one click away.

The enhanced Marking interface now displays student credentials front and center, with one-click copy buttons for usernames and passwords. No more switching tabs to find login details.

Quick-access buttons put Git, MySQL, and Postgres directly at your fingertips. Review code history, inspect database schemas, check live deployments—all from a unified, streamlined view.

For judges evaluating dozens of submissions under time pressure, these seconds add up. For teachers grading homework at midnight, they're a sanity saver.

Deployment Status: Watch Your Environment Come to Life

Setting up a new student environment? You'll now see exactly what's happening.

The new installation progress bar replaces generic status messages with real-time updates. Watch as containers initialize, databases provision, and Git repositories configure—each step visible, each milestone tracked.

For teachers, this means confidence. You know exactly when an environment is ready without refreshing or guessing.

For students, it means transparency. The anxiety of "is it working?" is replaced with clear progress indicators showing their coding environment spinning up.

UI Polish: The Details That Matter

Great software is built on thoughtful details. This release refines the experience across Mission Control:

Framework Selection Clarity

NStrim-provided frameworks now display a verify tick icon, instantly distinguishing official templates from custom configurations. When choosing a framework for your session, you know exactly what's been tested and optimized for the platform.

Reorganized Settings

Session configuration has moved to a dedicated Settings page, separating it from framework template management. Find what you need faster. Configure sessions without wading through unrelated options.

Streamlined Framework Management

The Frameworks page now focuses purely on template management with account-wide availability. Create a custom framework once, use it across all your sessions.

Built for Education. Tested in Competition.

NStrim 1.8.3 continues the mission that started with Skills Latvia, grew through EuroSkills 2023, and now powers coding education across Europe.

Every feature in this release was shaped by real educators and real competition organizers facing real challenges:

  • "My students need a way to ask questions without disrupting the class."
  • "I need documentation in my students' native language."
  • "Grading takes too long when I have to hunt for credentials."
  • "I want to see what's happening during environment setup."

We listened. We built. Here it is.

What's Next?

The Chat system launches in public beta with this release. Your feedback will shape its evolution—additional notification options, chat history search, and expanded moderation tools are already on the roadmap.

Framework documentation will continue expanding with video tutorials, advanced deployment scenarios, and integration guides for popular development tools.

And as always, if you're using NStrim in competition, classroom, or training environments, we want to hear from you. The best features come from the educators who use Mission Control every day.
